THEME: “Our time is now—our rights, our future”.
DAR ES SALAAM SEPTEMBER 21, 2022: The Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete Foundation (JMKF), in collaboration with Plan International Tanzania, will host a training session for 40 young girls on recognizing mental health issues, promoting well-being, particularly nutrition and physical activity, girls' rights as well as local context on laws and services available in the country.
As part of the International Day of the Girl Child (IDG) commemoration activities in Tanzania, the session will take place on September 24, 2022, at the Regency Park Hotel in Dar es Salaam. This year’s IDG theme is “Our time is now—our rights, our future”.
“The session will go by the name “Girls' Take Over” and it will act as a learning platform that will empower young girls with skills and knowledge on mental health issues, physical activity girls’ rights, and promoting their wellbeing”, says JMKF CEO Ms. Vanessa Anyoti.
She explains that the International Day of the Girl Child has developed into an important platform for recognizing girls' rights and the distinctive challenges girls around the world face and that it is now a call to action for radical social and political change to remove barriers of discrimination and prejudice that continue to hold girls back.
Tanzania joins other UN member states in promoting greater public awareness of issues affecting girls and giving them more opportunities to voice their opinions.
“Globally, girls still struggle with leadership, education, physical and mental health issues, and the safeguards required for a life free from violence, but they are the most powerful change agents in their local communities”, adds Ms. Anyoti.
