NEW DAWN FOR ZANZIBAR AS CCM AND ACT-WAZALENDO PRIORITIZE NATIONAL INTEREST

By Prosper Makene

Zanzibar, July 09, 2026 – Zanzibar ushered in a new dawn today as the Ruling Party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and ACT-Wazalendo signed a landmark political accord, placing national interest above partisan differences and paving the way for a Government of National Unity.

The agreement was signed at the State House Grounds in Zanzibar, following months of dialogue aimed at resolving political differences and strengthening democratic governance in the islands.

President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, said the accord demonstrates the commitment of political leaders to put the people of Zanzibar first.

“Today we are showing that when we prioritize our nation, we build peace, unity and development. This joint statement opens the door for implementing a Government of National Unity that will serve all Zanzibaris,” President Dr. Mwinyi said after witnessing the signing of the agreed agenda items by both parties.

He stressed that the Government will continue to work with all stakeholders, including civil society, religious leaders and the private sector, to ensure the process upholds stability, good governance and sustainable development.

The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, also commended the step. She said the reconciliation opens a new chapter in strengthening unity, stability and solidarity among the people of Zanzibar.

“This accord is a clear sign of political maturity. It shows that our leaders are ready to work together for peace and for the future of our nation,” President Dr. Samia stated.

On his part, the National Chairman of ACT-Wazalendo, Othman Masoud Othman, congratulated President Dr. Mwinyi for leading the reconciliation process. He said the agreement provides a foundation for lasting solutions to Zanzibar’s political challenges.

“We have chosen dialogue over division. This deal gives hope to every Zanzibari that our differences can be resolved through unity and respect,” Othman said.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior government officials and dignitaries including the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi; Former Presidents of Zanzibar, Dr. Amani Abeid Karume and Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein; and the Second Vice President of Zanzibar, Hemed Suleiman Abdulla.

Also present were leaders of political parties, religious leaders, officials from both the Union Government and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Heads of Defense and Security Organs, Ambassadors, representatives of International Organizations, and members of the public.

Political analysts say the accord represents the most significant step toward inclusive governance in Zanzibar in recent years and is expected to create a more stable environment for economic growth and social development.
